What every woman should know
One in 25 women in urban India will get cancer of the breast in their life time.
It has become the commonest cancer in urban women. The crab is a universal sign of cancer and that is why women should be beware of it invading an important part of their body.
Breast Self Examination (BSE)
Breast Self Examination should be done once a month after 20 years of age. There are many good reasons to do a BSE. One of the reasons is that it can be conveniently done in the warmth of your own home and secondly, the more you do it, the better you become. It is normal for the breasts to feel lumpy, tender or uneven especially before and during menstrual cycle. The best time to do a BSE is immediately following the period. This is because breasts are neither tender nor lumpy at this time. In post-menopausal women, any day of the month is suitable but pick one date in a month and do it on the same date every month.
Most breast lumps seen by clinicians are found by women themselves. Once a person suspects a lump on BSE, she should get this checked up by a physician. There should be little apprehension on discovering a breast lump, because most breast lumps are not cancer.
The Forum For Breast Protection has been able to produce a Educational Film on how to do BREAST SELF EXAMINATION. We have just done a nation wide launch of this Educational Film on 2nd, March 2007, at Air Force Auditorium, New Delhi, India with about 650 other guests, from all over India and also abroad.
